The BRADD staff provides technical assistance, program information, grant preparation, demographic data and spatial data for the ten south central Kentucky counties of the BRADD. The BRADD staff also provides homeownership counseling for LMI or low-to moderate-income families (families at or below 80% of the area median income for county of residency and family size as determined by HUD). The BRADD maintains a waiting list of LMI families interested in homeownership or homeowner rehabilitation. The Housing Specialist assists in the development of public/private partnerships to further affordable housing development. Current projects include special homebuyer financing programs, infrastructure improvement, subdivision development, new single-family construction, rehabilitation, and neighborhood revitalization. The Housing Specialist works closely with representatives of the Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) and other funding resources to further housing development for LMI families. In an effort to increase the opportunities for homeownership for LMI families the staff originates FHA, VA, and RHS mortgages. The staff provides technical assistance to local contractors to meet FHA, VA, and RHS building specifications for mortgage approval.
Barren River Housing Corporation (BRHC)
The non-profit Barren River Housing Corporation (BRHC) was formed in October 1995 to address the housing needs of low and moderate income persons of the BRADD. The fifteen member BRHC Board of Directors has at least one representative from each of the ten BRADD counties. Technical advisors from local planning commissions, financial institutions, and the construction industry assist the Board of Directors and the staff. It is the intent of the BRHC to bring local governments and private developers together to address the housing needs of low and moderate income persons, the elderly, and the disabled. The BRHC also provides homebuyer education and homeowner counseling programs.
