HAZARD MITIGATION

SPECIAL PURPOSE COMMITTEE MEETING

Friday, October 7, 2005

Heat Waves/Drought

Mr. Joe Austin, Chair of the Hazard Mitigation Special Purpose Committee for Heat Waves, called the meeting to order at 11:00 a.m., and discussed the purposes of the meeting. (Attendance list attached)

Mr. Alfonso Casana stated that in order to comply with FEMA, if projects are not in, funding will not be received. It is very important to analyze all information. Once the information is received Mr. Casana will compile the information on a CD and send to all members of the special purpose committee. Mr. Casana pointed out we do not want to happen here what happened in the south. The plan needs to be implemented, not just set on a shelf.

Mr. Austin and Mr. Paige reviewed the plan

Mr. Casana asked for suggestion on how we can contact the committee members to request comments. He would like the plan approved by FEMA before the next release of funds, which is October 1, 2006.

Mr. Paige suggested that Mr. Casana go ahead and send a letter to all members to have their comments in to save time.

Mr. Austin pointed out after reviewing the plan that in 1993 or 1994 an ice storm occurred, but was not listed in the plan. Mr. Austin will look for maps and any other information to send to Mr. Casana to include.

Mr. Casana said that each community had to participate in the planning process; that a county plan did not cover the cities in the county. He also noted that each community needed to have at least one mitigation action defined in the plan. Grants would only be made for needs identified in the plan.

Mr. Casana gave Mr. Paige and Mr. Austin a CD with maps for every county and natural hazard.

With no further comments, the meeting adjourned at 11:50 am.
