History

Located in the south-central part of the state in the Pennyroyal region, Hart County was the sixty-first in order of formation. Hart County remained primarily agricultural well into the 1900s. In the latter half of the twentieth century, however, the county has witnessed great change. Following the establishment in 1941 of Mammoth Cave National Park, part of which lies in Hart County, the county became a major tourist center, with attractions eventually including its own caves such as Horse Cave and Mammoth Onyx Cave, in addition to Nolin River Lake, created in 1963. In the 1960s, when I-65 was built through the county, the tourism industry benefited significantly. In 1988, tourism alone generated over $7 million in revenue for Hart County. In addition to agriculture and tourism, the Hart County economy includes the manufacture of bedding, trailers, motor homes, and lumber products.
