Barren River Area Development District project wins Spirit of Kentucky Award

Frankfort, Ky. (August 18, 2004) - Governor Ernie Fletcher and Governor's Office for Local Development Commissioner Darrell Brock presented local officials from the Barren River Area Development District with the first Spirit of Kentucky award during yesterday's closing session of the Governor's Local Issues Conference in Louisville.

The Spirit of Kentucky award recognizes projects that are the result of collaborative efforts. "It's important for cities, counties, and regional entities - both public and private - to work together to enrich their communities," said GOLD Commissioner Darrell Brock.

This year's recognition focused on the Barren River Regional Training and Teleconferencing Center, which provides meeting space with state-of-art technology to conduct video conferences. The center is used to conduct meetings, job training workshops, and many other activities by both public and private entities.

"The center is the result of the 10 counties and 28 cities in the Barren River Area Development District, along with the Barren River Workforce Investment Board, the Barren River Development Council and Trace Die Cast, Inc., working spirit of cooperation to complete a project," said Brock.

"The center is a great economic development tool since it can be marketed to prospective industries for use in meeting their training needs," added Brock.

The Governor's Office for Local Development, formerly the Department for Local Government, provides financial help in the ay of grant and loan assistance as well as advising local governments in matters of budget, personnel and other items relevant to those entities.
