Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Training Conference

The Barren River Area Agency on Aging, Kentucky Caregiver Support Program conducted a “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Training Conference” at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Wednesday May 9, 2007. Over 55 grandparents who are raising their grandchildren participated in this event. Dr. Nerea B. Minatrea, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor provided a training entitled  “ Abuse Addictions within the Family” Also, Daniel Curry, Paralegal from Kentucky Legal Aid presented “ Legal Issues and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.” Mr. Curry had an open discussion with the grandparents about legal issues they are currently facing.

The Grandparent Raising Grandchildren Training Conference was also the opportunity to recognize excellence within the Barren River This year, Carole Dunn, received The Barren River Family Caregiver “Grandparent Raising Grandchildren of the Year Award.”  Also, receiving the, “Positive Images in Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Award” was Sandra Carroll of the Butler County Support Group. We would like to congratulate these individual grandparent caregivers for their dedication and service.

Also, recognized at the “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Training Conference” were the Family Resource Center Managers and Family Youth Service Centers for their dedication in providing  “Best Practices for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Award.” This years winner’s were as follows: Karla Lashley and Patty Glass Butler County Support Group, Melissa Poynter and Paula Burba Hart County Support Group, Sheila Hunt and Penny Huffman Barren County Support Group, Susan Tabor and Cherie Riggenback Warren County Support Group, and Glenna Geralds Monroe County Support Group. Our hats go off to these dedicated individuals who have been of great support and encouragement to the Grandparents who are Raising their Grandchildren in the 10 county BRADD. They have assisted our program with providing valuable trainings and support groups throughout the BRADD
