Exploring the Possibility of Internet GIS for Local Government

The ability to access, display and manipulate geospatial data on the Internet has become a major data mining technique available to anyone equipped with only a web browser. In Logan County , BRADD has teamed up with Western Kentucky University to investigate the usefulness of Internet GIS for Local Government. The goal of this pilot project is to demonstrate the value of Internet GIS as a decision-making tool for local officials; full of their community’s geospatial data.

The importance of information is that it is an essential part of our ability to make good, rational decisions about the communities we live in. Internet GIS provides a means for online visualization tools that can better assemble, organize and manage the abundance of data we have today as well as providing a way for any individual connected to the Internet to experience the data, which in turn, provides the foundation for a better understanding of the environment we live in and for the ability to make clearer, better decisions.

The pilot project is currently being developed and available for review at http://www.bradd.org/Logan_GIS. Please direct any comments and/or suggestions to Shawn Marie Simpson at shawnmarie@bradd.org
