Three winning “Bright Ideas” came from rural communities in the Barren River Area in the first annual competition to find and assist potential entrepreneurs. The 2004 David Garvin Entrepreneurship Golf Classic raised funds for support and $8,000 in prizes. Timothy Lee Hack, of Morgantown, was picked from 67 entrants to win the first “Bucks for Bright Ideas” competition. The $2,000 second place award went to a mother and daughter team from Lewisburg. Third place award went to a Summer Shade resident.
“Bucks For Bright Ideas” was a joint effort by BRADD, the Central Region Innovation and Commercialization Center, the Western Kentucky University Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the Barren River Development Council. Libraries, Chambers, and the Extension Service hosted meetings in each county to help boost interest. Workshops were held to encourage networking.
All 67 entrants in the competition discussed their ideas with ICC staff and received guidance on securing patents, developing business plans, and learning about funding opportunities.
Funds for a second competition have been raised through the 2005 David Garvin Entrepreneurship Golf Classic.
