BARREN RIVER AREA DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT/AREA AGENCY ON AGING TAKES HOME TWO AWARDS FROM SE4A CONFERENCE
Ben Crocker, Attorney at Law, and members of the Barren River Local Coordinating Council on Elder Abuse, Debbie McCarty BRADD/AAA Director and Michelle Hines, BRADD/AAA Aging Planner.

The Barren River Area Development District/Area Agency on Aging is proud to announce that Barren River Family Caregiver Support Program Coordinator, Kim Halter received the Positive Images in Aging Award at the Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging (SE4A) Conference held on November 12, 2005 in Orange Beach, Alabama.  Ms. Halter received this award for her work with Western Kentucky University Psychology Department, which provided for an eight-week educational series for grandparents raising grandchildren.  Ms. Halter worked with Dr. Melissa Hakman of WKU and a team of graduate students to offer an eight-week educational training and support groups for both grandparents and their grandchildren during the months of September through December of 2004.  The focus of both groups was to facilitate coping with the placement within the grandparents’ home as well as foster the relationship between the grandparent and the grandchild. 

The Barren River Local Coordinating Council on Elder Abuse and Ben Crocker, Attorney received the Public Private Partnership Award at the SE4A conference for the Public Awareness Silver Ribbon Campaign to bring awareness to the Bowling Green Community about the serious crime of Elder Abuse and Exploitation.  Mr. Crocker provided funding to purchase Silver Lapel Pins to wear during the month of May.  The pins and a flyer were passed out throughout the community.  Both Mr. Crocker and members of the Council on Elder Abuse appeared on radio, television and provided information to the media to bring Elder Abuse Awareness to the community.  Mr. Crocker also purchased an ad in the local guide for” Finding Long-Term Care” which focused on the signs of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
